Sometimes one key concept is all it takes to really flesh out a character. For example, one of my characters was a Catfolk who somehow got a dog companion. Through figuring out why that would have happened I was able to figure out the rest of his personality.

What are some of your favorite quirks and traits you've given to characters?

I don't know if it counts, but I had an NPC rogue who was a compulsive liar and a kleptomaniac. This led to a great bit where she got caught trying to steal from a merchant and ran off, so the players decided to go and look for her. That ended up with them foiling a Drow plot to take over the surface, picking up a half-orc street thug as a henchman, finding a mute druid to help them locate said Drow in a run-down mansion, and cleaning up a group of ruffians. They found the rogue just a little ways outside of town on her way to the next one. She was in and out of the group several times over the course of the campaign, until she later had a kid with one of the player characters and ran off on her own again. Most of the players liked her enough to keep her involved with the story, which was neat.
