As a DM you have the power to craft the environment however you choose. But you'll never be able to predict the weird ways your players will use the environment to their advantage.

What are the craziest ways you or other players have used your surroundings?

My DM once put a giant barrel of gunpowder near an encounter for flavor and my character was strong enough to pick up and throw it. Long story short I crushed 2 enemies without breaking the barrel and another character blew it up to kill the rest of the enemies we we supposed to run from.

GURPS 3e game. Supers game where we had to infiltrate an enemy base covertly. We entered through the sewers. Someone sabotaged our maps, and eventually, we ended up under the showers for the guards' locker room.

One member of our team focused purely on psionic powers, and the short version is that we took advantage of the contents of the sewer to stage what we thought looked like a freak plumbing problem or prank. Regrettably, we got a little carried away with it and instead of clearing the showers and creating a mess that would hide our entrance into the facility, the disturbance so obviously required "powers" that it tipped off the big bads about our presence in the base.

It all turned out okay in the end; thanks to some lucky rolls (and probably a GM that decided he wanted us to finish early), we powered through the resultant ambush quite easily.

Ah, the sewers. Second only to ventilation shafts for heroic sneaking.

What made it really fun was that, after we were almost done, the GM was like "Oh, wait; the psionic teleportation ability requires the object being teleported from location A to location B be touched."

The person running the psi quickly stated something along the lines of "I'm not touching this s---!".

The other player and I looked at each other and in character one of us said: "If you won't, we'll just make you." Actually, it may have been both in character and out of character. The player of the psi agreed, but technically we did have to force his glove off and shove his hand into some filth... which suddenly made teleporting said mess off his hand a logical decision. XP

Yeah, fun times with my early high school RPG group. Sadly, the game was run by our friend who was our best GM... when he was not radically transforming his games due to flights of fancy (or to work in his latest RPG book). Oh, or ending them early because he had become bored. -_-

There was the time when I had everyone fighting a clergyman in a temple with giant flaming braziers. So the swordsman says "I'm gonna pick it up and throw it at him."

And everyone's like "Are you crazy? You'll burn your hand off!"

So he goes "But I have a 20 strength!"

Since then the idea has always been if you have a 20 STR, you're immune to fire damage.

So what you're telling me is that if I go to the gym not only will I get stronger but I'll become fireproof? Heck yes!
